Myanmar people are one of the most literate people of Southeast Asia. They also have a penchant for keeping written records, form records of the donations to family and court records. This has enabled our forebears to make their thoughts and actions known to us, conquering the constraints of time and place.
Scholars know that there are valuable historical and literary materials in traditional texts to unlock the past and use them to understand the present.
In Myanmar we find that there are mainly five different kinds of medium used for the written records of the past. They are:-
(1) Stone
(2) Brick Plaster
(3) Metal
(4) Palm-leaf and
(5) Paper
There are occasionally other more esoteric materials used for writing such as ivory and palm-leaves and rags coated with lacquer.
